Natural hair?

- Hello, lol, I am black and am transitioning towards natural hair in a few months I will be doing the big chop. I already know some basic things like about heat, not using grease or anything with mineral or petroleom (or however you spell that) oil. Are there any other tips I should know about and any recommended websites? Thanks

I happen to be a Napologist by nature! I have dreadlocks and all I can say is enjoy your hair in it's natural state!

The 12 Strands

1.We admitted we were powerless over perms and that our lives had become un-mane-ageable.

2. Came to believe that a Hair Power greater than ourselves could restore us to nappiness.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our follicles over to the care of a Higher Hair Power as we understood Her.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of our follicles.

5. Admitted to a Higher Hair Power, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our follicle failures.

6. Were entirely ready to have our Higher Hair Power remove all these defects of character.

7. Humbly asked our Higher Hair Power to remove our shortcombings.

8. Made a list of all nappy-headed people we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to nappy-headed people wherever possible.

10. Continued to take personal hair inventory and when we snuck out to get a touch-up promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through meditation to improve our conscious contact with nappiness as we understand it to be, meditating only for more knowledge of that state of being and the power to maintain it.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to permaholics and to practice these principles in all our hair affairs.

moisturize hair
when your growing your natural hair your going to have to do alot of washing because your hair might not be gettting all the nutrients it needs for grease but i garentee it wil grow out faster
try using a reconstructing conditioner. It will help repair your hair if its damaged. Make sure you trim it every 6 weeks. Use a pick instead of a brush or comb. Try and stay away from heat. If you do use it use something for thermal protection.
Always keep your hair moisturized. Natural hair tends to be dry, so a good moisutizer is key to great looking hair. There are many brands out there so you will have to learn through trial and error what works well for you. The same goes for styling products. Congrats on being your natural self.

hi, The big key to transitioning to natural hair is moisture, It's very important that your hair gets the proper moisture. Like using a heating cap when applying conditioner to hair. Or if you have a sit under dryer you can apply conditioner and then a plastic cap and sit under the dryer for 15 min. This way you make sure the conditioner sinks deep into the hair follicle. Another tip is to use a product specifically for natural hair. Since I started to grow my hair out naturally I have found that carol's daughter does the best job for black hair. It is kinda expensive though, but it is well worth it. Below are some websites that I think you would find helpful :), I would even recommend a book called Textured Tresses that talks about the different hair types and how to specifically care for natural hair.
It is a lot of work and you will get discouraged at times but don't let it change your mind about going natural. I have always had good hair that was long and bone straight with a perm, I'd go 3 months and still not need a perm, my roots would just get wavy. I haven't permed my hair in about 16 months and am going to get the salon on Sat. to get the remaining perm cut out (2.5';); I've been getting my hair trimmed religiously every six weeks. It will leave me with the shorter hair than I'm used to (7-8';) long but I'm ready to wash condition and go curly.

I'd say the best thing to do is condition, condition, condition, rinse with cold water after shampooing (leaves hair shiny), deep condition regularly (2-4 weeks), only brush hair wet. With the permed ends, I usually apply leave in conditioner and braid into section or knot into sections. Try some homemade recipes which are softer on your hair. I just found a few and will use the following with the next wash:

2T olive oil

2T light sesame oil

2 eggs

2T coconut milk

2T honey

1tsp coconut oil (I may not add this)

apply to hair for 15-20 min, cover with cap then shampoo

I often just put castor oil on ends and on scalp wherever I can get it then part hair and apply warm up honey my scalp and let it sit for about 5 min while I get ready to shower.

Also, I have read in many places that you can do a conditioner only wash between shampoos. Some wash there hair twice a week in the summer (once with conditioner only) and once a week in the winter. When it comes down to it, you have to figure out what is best for you through trial and error.

Hope this helps.
