What is the optimum length natural hair should be before getting clip in hair extensions?

My hair is about 3 inches at it's shortest length.


I would like to get hair extensions to grow my hair out with, but I'm not sure if my hair's long enough yet?What is the optimum length natural hair should be before getting clip in hair extensions?
You can put hair extensions in at any length but it can sometimes look really obvious, the best length would have to be about a inch shorter then your shoulder for a more realistic look.What is the optimum length natural hair should be before getting clip in hair extensions?
