Why does natural hair (on black people especially women) considered a political statement?

why can't it just be seen as how most of our hair grows? Also black women who wear their hair natural are seen as afrocentric that's so annoying. It's just how our hair grows out of our scalps. Why does natural hair (on black people especially women) considered a political statement?
I think it's b/c so many black women today use relaxers, weaves, and extensions. B/c of this when a black woman does wear her hair natural (or if she only presses her hair to straighten it) they stand out. They are going against the status quo of what ';good hair'; is and not pulling that ';quarter cherokee'; crap that so many pull. Why does natural hair (on black people especially women) considered a political statement?
I think people think it's a challenge to deal with Black hair. They think of weaves, they think of relaxers, braids, washing it when appropriate, how to avoid humidity when the hair is straight, etc. I think people who aren't knowledgeable on black hair get their gestures from black people.

As far as natural hair being looked at as Afrocetric. No one thinks that. And if so, one reason I can think of is how some black women with afros want to ridicule black women who relax their natural hair. Considering them self hating or not black enough. But depending on the woman, she's a real black woman wearing weaves. I mean some of the negative aspects of some Afrocentric people is very contradicting. If a black woman's hair is real, why can't she relax it? And to be honest, Afros don't look good on every black woman opposed to how beautiful many look with today's popular hair styles for natural hair mind you. You don't have to sport Afros, dread locks, twist to look good natural and many black women use hair treatments to have a decent Afro just like women who straighten their hair.

alright Good Night people
Lol

I have no clue.I just always thought of natural hair, just being hair.

I like my hair natural

Although sorry to say,but i notice alot of afrocentrists wear their hair ';natural'; so that's where that stereotype comes from

I guess wearing it in it's natural state is basically like saying ';we aren't giving into the white standards of beauty';(from afrocentrists pov)
It's basically inevitable because going natural pretty much means that you have ';awaken';, if you will. You aren't doing what's accepted by society and you're just being yourself. And, as we know, going against the grain in anyway means that you're just begging to stick out like a sore thumb. You know it's a damn shame when you can't even be yourself without being viewed as a political statement.
i so agree, white women asian and hispanic where theirs as natural, just because it is natually straight people see it as the norm, but because black women's hair stands out the most, to others they will think it is having too much pride in their race. so what, thats just the way the hair grows!

and the other reason, is because many people ignorantly think, when a black woman relaxes her hair, she is trying to be white, no! she is trying to do a new hair style, as a tamed style, the natural style is more fun but its natural, and its just hair people!
thats society stamping another label on something with the big yellow caution tape.

Yes, its how our hair grows and its beautiful but society has brainwashed people to thinking things like afros mean untamed hair and unprofessional, as well as other natural hair styles such as locks.

It's sad, and yet another thing to force us into a Euro-centric mindset
its the same with black men and dreads if you got dreads they think your a thug or use drugs and don't go to school and you can wear your hair like you want to you'll still look good
Cuz Society sux...hair is hair..style or no style..and if they don't like it they can get the lipstick and get ready to kiss a very moon like place
The historical implications, not to mention it is not trendy in current society. Either way, do you!
i personally think black women look great with their natural hair. like in lil twists or something... I think the whole hair extinsions crap isn't for anyone.
U a nappy headed black girl and I'm a nappy Afro hoe
Your hair is beautiful.

You go babe!
I know what you mean.
In your mind only.
Well...if it's just hair, why are you always talking about it? lol
I find that many black women who wear their natural hair are more freakier in bed.
